THE ADDIS ABABA AMERICAN SCHOOL
New information concerning The Addis Ababa American School (AAAS) will be available soon.
AAAS was replaced at the end of the 1966 school year by ACS, the American Community School of Addis Ababa.
ACS changed to ICS "The International Community School of Addis Ababa" in the 1978-1979 school year and is still in operation today.
On April 29, 1964, His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I granted a 50 year lease on a 15 acre tract of land (southeast of the Imperial Golf Course and old International Airport) for the establishment of the American Community School of Addis Ababa.
To my knowledge there were no ACS yearbooks printed for school years 1965 and 1966 but there were class photos taken which were made available to the students. If you have any of those photos, and are willing to share them on this Web site, please scan them and send them in.
In the interest of privacy, I am limiting access to the American Community School yearbooks posted on this Web site to the people who appear in those yearbooks (and their family members).

CD or DVD copies of the 1964 American School (Eagle) yearbook and the 1967 through 1974 ACS (Jib) yearbooks are available. Contact Web Host for more information.
Here (click numbers 1 and 2 below) are some GoogleEarth aerial views taken in 2009 of the old Addis Ababa American School (AAAS) grounds:
#1 In both views I have identified the school area as I (being between 6 and 8 year old at the time) remember it.
#2 closer view.
Thanks go out to Gilbert (Butch) and Neil Prothero for their directions to the old American School grounds, and for all the other help they have provided over the years.

* I attended the Deutsche Botschaftsschule Addis Ababa (the German School) during the 1962 and 1963 school years (Kindergarten and first grade), and then the Addis Ababa American School (U.S. Department of Defense School) for the 1964 and 1965 school years (second and third grades) and finally the American Community School of Addis Ababa from 1967 through 1970 (fifth through eighth grades). My family and I left Ethiopia in June 1970 for Tehran, Iran where I spent the 1971 and 1972 school years (ninth and tenth grades) at the Tehran American School. We departed Iran in the summer of 1972 for McAllen, Texas where I graduated from McAllen High School in 1974.
