Mr. Hanna and the Custodians

    The American Community School was established on April 29, 1964. Serving on the first Board of Governors were: Mr. E. F. Overend, Chairman of the Board; Captain R. Moon, EAL (Ethiopian Air Lines); Major D. Tippin, MAAG (Military Assistance Advisory Group); Major J. Schwartz, MAAG; and Mr. W. Davis, USIS* (United States Information Service).

    The 15 acres of land on which the school is located was granted by His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, on a 50 year lease. The buildings were designed by Z. Enav M. Tedros Architects and Town Planners. The construction of the school was by Mr. G. Concetto and started in July of 1965. The first day of school was September 28, 1966 with an enrollment of 362 students in grades Kindergarten through 12.

    The Board members of 1966-67 are: Dr. W. Nutting, CSAID**, Chairman of the Board; Mr. Eugene Rosenfeld, USIS, Vice Chairman; Colonel J. McGlone, MAAG, Treasurer; Mrs. Rhea Robinson, U.S. Embassy, Secretary; Major jack Kelly, MAAG; Mr. Robert Donhauser, U.S. Embassy; Mrs. Janet Stoltzfus, U.S. Embassy; Mr. James Walker, USAID; Sergeant Edward Dowling, MAAG; Mr. G. K. Greer, EAL.

    The Principal purposes of the Association shall be:
    To establish a school which shall be known as the "American Community School of Addis Ababa".
    To provide the best possible education facilities and instructional programs for children of United States citizens residing in Addis Ababa and throughout Ethiopia, and to the extent feasible, to provide the same for Ethiopian children and children of other nationalities residing in Ethiopia.
    To develop in its students an interest in the history, language, and culture of Ethiopia.
    To demonstrate by its cooperative organization, educational philosophy, and high standards of education the best principles associated with American education. To the extent practical and appropriate, to provide examples in Ethiopia of American teaching methods and policies.
    To strengthen through its educational programs the good relations and understanding which exists between the peoples of Ethiopia and the United States of America.

*  Overseas, USIA (United Stated Information Agency) was known as USIS (United States Information Service).

** CSAID appears (to me) to be a typographical error. I assume that is should read: USAID.
