Mr. Marlyn Heintzelman  (photo as of yet unavailable).

In early 1967 I assumed duties as chief of the Field Classification phase of the mapping project. The name of the civilian FC team was Dakota and consisted of seven persons, Larry Johnson, Edsel Phelps, Doug Teagle, Richard Simms, Dick Emerson, Sonny Lanham, Richard McCormick, and myself.

Later in 1967 Larry Johnson was assigned to advise the military FC team Drifter and to act as liaison with me. Drifter party was headed by a Sgt. Later on Larry Johnson was replaced by Edsel Phelps from Dakota party.

The FC teams traversed the country from Sudan on the West and North, Djbouti and Somalia on the East and to Kenya in the South. Teams were responsible for depicting on aerial photography all detail to be shown on the final maps (except for Geodetic control and contours).

Ethiopia is steeped in antiquities and natural resources and wild animals are abundant. The hunting was great! The people are very curious but friendly and helpful. There were numerous tribes speaking in different dialects and it was often necessary to hire local interpreters. This project was indeed an adventure to remember!
